Top 10…TV Shows About Parenting/Families and…

…The Association That Comes Along With It (At Least For Me That Is)

One thing that I have always loved doing is bringing association of my favourite TV shows into my regular life. I do it all the time through all kinds of different ways. For example, the week Baby Bird was born I rewatched ‘Friends’ from the beginning for the 13th time to create a new association. Every time an episode of ‘Friends’ comes on TV or I rewatch the series in the future it will bring me right back to when Baby Bird is born and I will relive all the great memories from that time.

I do this all the time with all my favourite shows. ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’ makes me think of Canmore because the first time I watched the complete series was on a week long trip to Canmore so now I always think of Canmore every time I watch ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’. ‘Life In Pieces’ makes me think about Mama Bird being pregnant with Baby Bird. ‘Home Improvement’ always make me think about Halloween. ‘Full House’ always makes me think about coming home from elementary school. I could go on and on for every show I watch.

Mama Bird always gets a laugh out of my weird associations and quirks and I was just telling about another new one that made her give me one of those looks of, “Oh my you are so ridiculous" haha. The new quirk is how since becoming a parent all the TV shows that have to do with families and parenting are that much better now. All of a sudden I’m the lead character Dad like in these shows haha. I know, I know, I’m a little weird. But regardless I really enjoy it and have fun it.

So I thought I should do a ‘Top 10…TV Shows About Families’

There is just a couple stipulations for this list:
1. It has to be a show about parenting, children, and families and all the craziness that goes along with it (So ‘Friends’ won’t be on the list, because even though Ross, Rachel, Monica, and Chandler all have children at some point during the show, the show does not centre around their parenting).
2. The type of show that has real parenting situations no matter how exaggerated the circumstances are (So Arrested Development won’t make the list because that awesome show is just funny ridiculousness that isn’t close to real haha).
3. The main characters also have to be parents (So The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air won’t make the list because that is not centered around the parenting situations).

So here we go:

10. Family Matters

Family Matters

Now I haven't rewatched the series since elementary when I used to watch it. So this show is making the list because of how much I liked it in elementary school. I remember it having lots of good wholesome family learning lessons as a kid and still being enjoyable.

Favourite Character/s: Steve Urkel and Carl Winslow

How Many Times Have I Rewatched It: None

Will I Rewatch It With My Kids: No I am going to preserve the memory of the show as I don't think it will hold up today.

9. Cosby Show

The Cosby Show

Again this is the only other show on this list I haven't rewatched since elementary. I remember it having lots of good wholesome family learning lessons as a kid and still being enjoyable.

Favourite Character/s: Cliff Huxtable and Theo Huxtable

How Many Times Have I Rewatched It: None

Will I Rewatch It With My Kids: No I am going to preserve the memory of the show as I don't think it will hold up today.

8. Full House

Full House

As a kid this show was definitely one of my favourites and I rewatched the series last year to see if the quality would still hold up or not and I really liked it (but maybe it was the nostalgic value of it). Regardless a great family show. (On a side note, the reboot of a 'Fuller House' was an extreme disappointment and it definitely didn't do justice for the 'Full House' legacy)

Favourite Character/s: Uncle Jesse

How Many Times Have I Rewatched It: Once

Will I Rewatch It With My Kids: Definitely, as long as they are liking it because it may be an "old show" for the younger generation

7. Last Man Standing

Last Man Standing

Tim Allen has got to be the best TV Dad and when I found out he was doing this show, it was a must watch and it did not disappoint. I love how he refers in a funny way to his 'Home Improvement' days and has the actors from the show as special guests from time to time. I can't believe it got cancelled, it was a great quality show.

Favourite Character/s: Mike Baxter, Mandy Baxter, Kyle Anderson, Ed Alzate, Chuck Larabee

How Many Times Have I Rewatched It: Twice

Will I Rewatch It With My Kids: Absolutely I will

6. This Is Us

This Is Us

THIS SHOW IS POWERFUL! It's emotional and beautiful and loving and intense. It's a great show! I have cried during it a few times (The pilot, when Jack and Rebecca lose one of their babies 😢). They have written this show very well!

Favourite Character/s: Jack Pearson, Randall Pearson, Kevin Pearson, Kate Pearson, Toby Damon

How Many Times Have I Rewatched It: None

Will I Rewatch It With My Kids: Yes I will if they want to

5. Two And A Half Men (Pre Ashton Kutcher)

Two and A Half Men

The blend of the parenting styles between Charlie and Alan create some really funny situations. Having Alan trying to be the responsible adult and Charlie not caring at all is awesome. This show well all the way down hill when Ashton Kutcher came on the show though, for me that is and I stopped watching it.

Favourite Character/s: Charlie Harper, Alan Harper, Berta, Evelyn Harper

How Many Times Have I Rewatched It: Four (But only Seasons 1-8)

Will I Rewatch It With My Kids: Probably not, just for me to rewatch

4. Life In Pieces

Life In Pieces

This show is fantastic! The way it's done as every episode is 4 short stories with the entire family is so well done. This show has the potential to move way higher on the list when it has more seasons under it's belt. Right now it's only in it's third and it can't be considered a classic that early. Time will tell but if they keep up the way they are going, I think they will pull it off.

Favourite Character/s: Jen Short, Tim Hughes, Greg Short, Heather Hughes, John Short

How Many Times Have I Rewatched It: Once (It's hard not to keep rewatching it, but I don't want to overdo it haha)

Will I Rewatch It With My Kids: Absolutely! I hope they want to

3. Everybody Loves Raymond

Everybody Loves Raymond

Classic family sitcom right here. The dysfunctional family and the crazy situations they get into make for an awesome show.

Favourite Character/s: Ray Barone, Robert Barone, Frank Barone, Marie Barone

How Many Times Have I Rewatched It: Four

Will I Rewatch It With My Kids: Definitely, if they want to. But I'm guessing I will be rewatching it while it's just on in the background for them haha

2. Home Improvement

Home Improvement

Tim Allen is without a doubt the best TV Dad ever. This show is a classic and was one of my favourites growing up and I think still holds up today. This show also has the best Halloween episodes. The only reason it's not number one on this list for me is because the last two seasons were really hit or miss with the episodes.

Favourite Character/s: Tim Taylor, Wilson Wilson, Randy Taylor, Jill Taylor, Al Borland

How Many Times Have I Rewatched It: Five

Will I Rewatch It With My Kids: Absolutely! Especially at Halloween time :)

1. Modern Family

Modern Family

This multiple family dynamics going on in this show are so hilarious. It's on my Top 10...TV shows of all time. It has everything needed for a classic show: the goofy Dad, the overbearing Mom, the care free Grandpa, the drama filled gay couple, the loud foreigner, and the old soul kid. Great combination!

Favourite Character/s: Phil Dunphy, Jay Pritchett, Cameron Tucker, Gloria Delgado-Pritchett,

How Many Times Have I Rewatched It: Five (I have to hold back rewatching more so I don't overdue and drive Mama Bird crazy haha)

Will I Rewatch It With My Kids: Absolutely!
