Checklist: What You Need For A Newborn...

…At least according to us 😊

Lately we have had a couple friends ask us what we think they need to buy, don’t need to buy, and other purchasing tips we might have. So we thought we would turn it into a post for everyone. So here we go, Mama and Papa Bird’s list of baby products you need for a newborn baby.

  • Baby Monitor
  • Bassinet (We did the bassinet in our room for the two month and then transferred her to the crib) *NOTE: get a good one.  We recommend one that has collapsable sides or that swivels and can pull onto the bed.  The easier it is to access your newborn from bed, the happier you will be.
  • Burp Cloths (LOTS OF THEM)
  • Changing Pad
  • Dog Poop Bags (Put the diapers in these and it helps to contain the smell)
  • Diapers (LOTS OF THEM)
  • Dresser
  • Dresser Organizer (For diapers, Lotions, Poop Bags)
  • Hamper
  • Humidifier
  • Night light
  • Owlet Smart Sock (Version 1 is totally good enough, Version 2 has the app but it definitely doesn’t make or break the product)
  • Outfits (No more than 8 per style per size. Styles: Sleepers, Onesies, Pants {Superstore makes the best baby pants}, Other outfits like dresses {In our opinion these aren’t really needed but do make for some cute pictures})
  • Rocking Chair
  • Scratch Mitts
  • Sleep Sack
  • SMALL Garbage Bin (Don’t get one of those diaper genie things because they stink. We chose a really small garbage bin so you HAVE to take the diaper garbage out on a daily basis. You may think it’s annoying but trust me it’s much better)
  • Socks
  • Soother X2
  • Swaddle Blankets (3 Max. As soon as you can put them in a sleep sack, do it. We found Baby Bird slept way better in a sleep sack versus in a swaddle)
  • Velcro boots
  • Touques (4 of them should be good. For sleeping at night and for leaving the house)
  • Wipe Warmer
  • Wipes

  • Baby D-Drops
  • Bottles (Various Sizes) (Phillips Avent)
  • Bottle Sterilizer (Phillips Avent)
  • Bottle Warmer (Phillips Avent)
  • Breast Pump (Manual)
  • Ovol

Living Room

  • Bumbo Seat
  • Breast Feeding Pillow
  • Bouncer Chair
  • Dock-A-Tot
  • Portable Playpen/Changing Table/Bassinet

  • Soother Clip Attachment (Chewelry and Babe makes silicon beaded clips-MUCH easier to clean and great for teething)
  • Baby Carrier (Mountain Buggy and Beluga Baby)
  • Stroller
  • Car seat
  • Diaper Bag
    • Diapers
    • Wipes
    • Extra set of clothing
    • Soother
    • Burp Cloth

  • Baby holder (Mesh) for the Bath Tub
  • Baby Lotion
  • Shampoo
  • Thermometer
  • Washcloth
  • Water toys ie. Rubber Duck, etc.

  • Nipple Cream
  • Thermometer

(Not Needed Right In The Beginning But Soon After)

  • Crib (If you are going to have them in the crib right away then ignore this part. We just decided to go the bassinet route)
  • Toys
  • Books
  • Exersaucer or Bouce-a-roo (don’t need this until about 3-4months old)

Hopefully this helps if you are wondering what to get for your newborn baby. If you want to download a PDF of this list click here.
